CORRESPONDING WITH YOUR LOCAL, STATE & NATIONAL ELECTED OFFICIALS
When
writing remember to type on personal or business stationary, with
return address on the letter. Identify the topic, clearly state your
opinion and list the reasons for your position. Business Owners:
Be sure to identify your company, list your products or services and
include the number of people you employ.
Telephone calls can be effective when you need to contact your
legislator immediately, mostly regarding an impending vote. If you
do not get to speak directly with a legislator make sure you have a
clear message that includes: your name, title, company name,
telephone number, bill number, subject and how you would like the
legislator to vote.
In addition, thanks to new technology, e-mail correspondence can
also be effective – although a phone call, letter or fax are usually
better – be sure to learn your elected officials the preferred
method of communication. Be sure to include the Bill Number and
Subject in the reference line. As with the above state clearly your
opinion and list the reasons for your position. Business Owners: Be
sure to identify your company, list your products or services and
include the number of people you employ.
In all cases, ask the legislator for a response and thank the
legislator for their time. |
